JOB DESCRIPTION

A Project Estimator is responsible for estimating the costs and resources required for a construction project, building project and for sub-contract projects. A Project Estimator plays a crucial role in the pre-construction phase by analyzing project specifications, blueprints, and other relevant documentation to develop accurate cost estimates for each project.  

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  1. Cost Estimation: Review project plans, specifications, and related documents to understand the scope of work and project requirements. Utilize construction industry knowledge and experience to estimate the costs involved in materials, labor, equipment, and subcontractor services. Prepare detailed cost estimates, including itemized breakdowns of various project components.

  2. Quantity Takeoffs: Conduct quantity takeoffs from construction drawings to determine the quantities of materials needed for the project. Calculate quantities for items such as concrete, steel, lumber, piping, electrical fixtures, and other building materials.

  3. Supplier and Subcontractor Coordination: Identify potential suppliers and subcontractors required for the project. Obtain quotes and pricing information from vendors and subcontractors to include in the cost estimates. Collaborate with procurement teams to evaluate suppliers, negotiate pricing, and ensure timely delivery of materials and services.

  4. Cost Analysis and Value Engineering: Analyze cost estimates to identify areas where cost savings can be achieved without compromising project quality. Propose value engineering alternatives and cost-effective solutions to optimize project costs.

  5. Bid Preparation: Prepare comprehensive bid proposals and tender documents based on the cost estimates. Ensure that all relevant information, including project specifications, schedules, and contractual requirements, is accurately included in the bids. Collaborate with the business development team to submit bids within specified deadlines.

  6. Project Documentation: Maintain accurate records of cost estimates, bids, and related documentation. Update estimates and budgets as project details evolve or change. Prepare and present reports, including cost breakdowns, to project managers and stakeholders.

  7. Risk Assessment: Identify and assess potential risks and uncertainties that may impact project costs. Collaborate with project managers and stakeholders to develop contingency plans and strategies to mitigate risks.

  8. Continuous Improvement: Stay updated with industry trends, new construction techniques, and cost estimation methodologies. Incorporate best practices and lessons learned from previous projects to improve the accuracy and efficiency of cost estimates.

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION

  • Associates and/or Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).

  • At least 3 years of proven experience in estimating role in the construction/building field

  • In-depth knowledge of construction materials, methods, resources, and processes including pre-engineered metal buildings.

  • Proficient in reading and interpreting construction drawings, blueprints, and specifications.

  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills.

  • Proficiency in using construction estimation software and tools.

  • Microsoft Office experience.

  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with cross-functional teams.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills to meet project deadlines.
